PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Canadian agro-management company Stevia Nutra Corp says it has acquired 50 acres of prime agricultural land in Kampong Speu to propagate stevia, a natural no-calarie sweetener.

In a statement Friday, the company said the location would provide the company with "lucrative import and export opportunities, enabling it to capitalize on the explosive demand for this all-natural, zero calorie sweetener."

President Brian Dicks said Cambodia was chosen as the company's operational hub "based on its ideal climate, our relationships in the region, the proximity to markets and the strong local support for agro development projects."

Chief Agronomist Ahmad El-Sheikh said the land was "
perfect" for growing growth. "I have been working on stevia cultivation and propagation for the past 17 years and I have not encountered such optimal conditions," he said.  "Our access to clean ground-water and facilities make this particular location ideal for our Stevia Propagation Centre."
